Proxmox migration

Migrate to Proxmox VE,
without disrupting production

Leaving VMware or Hyper-V? We audit your infrastructure, plan the migration and run it in batches, with no service interruption. VM conversion, networking, storage and backup handover: we take all of it on.

Where you start from

We migrate from your current platform

VMware, Hyper-V, Citrix or public cloud. We have a proven procedure for each source and adapt it to your context.

VMware vSphere / ESXiMicrosoft Hyper-VCitrix / XenServerPublic cloud (AWS, Azure)Other hypervisor

How it works

A migration in three steps

01

Audit and mapping

We inventory your VMs, their dependencies, the network and the storage. You get a Proxmox VE capacity plan and a costed migration schedule.

02

Pilot migration

We migrate a test scope: disk conversion, performance and backup validation. The procedure is settled before we touch production.

03

Cutover and operation

Production moves over in planned batches, without disruption. Then you run the cluster yourself, or hand it to us.

The scope

What the engagement covers

  • Disk and VM format conversion
  • Network and VLAN reconfiguration on Proxmox VE
  • Backup handover and restore testing
  • Performance testing before cutover
  • Training your teams on Proxmox VE
  • Documentation of the migrated infrastructure

Why LenoIT

A migration run by Proxmox specialists

  • LenoIT is a Proxmox Authorized Reseller
  • Batch cutover: no forced service interruption
  • Standard Proxmox VE, no proprietary layer, no lock-in
  • Support until you are autonomous, or managed operation

Frequently asked

Proxmox VE migration: your questions

How long does a migration to Proxmox VE take?

It depends on the number of VMs and the network complexity. An SMB with a few dozen VMs typically migrates in two to six weeks, audit and testing included. You get a costed schedule as soon as the audit is done.

Can we migrate from VMware without a service interruption?

Yes. We migrate in batches: each group of VMs moves over in a planned window while the rest of production keeps running. Critical services are migrated last, once the procedure is proven on a pilot scope.

Do we need to buy new hardware to migrate to Proxmox VE?

Not necessarily. Proxmox VE runs on standard x86 hardware, often the same machines that run VMware or Hyper-V. The audit tells you whether your hardware fits or part of it should be renewed. You can also migrate to a cluster we host.

What happens to our backups after the migration?

Backup handover is part of the engagement. Proxmox VE relies on Proxmox Backup Server for incremental, deduplicated backups. For off-site, encrypted and tested backups, we operate Cloud-PBS, the managed backup service from LenoIT.

What about our VMware licences after the migration?

Once the migration is complete you no longer need VMware licences and you stop renewing them. Proxmox VE has no per-core and no per-VM licence; a per-socket subscription funds development and gives access to the stable enterprise repository and support. The detailed comparison is on our Proxmox VE versus VMware page.
